Mathematics Department

Mathematics is the science that deals with the logic of numbers, quantity, space, structure and change. It is said that Mathematics is the language of the universe that describes the physical events in nature by the use of numbers and formulas. Mathematical reasoning is utilised in many sciences to provide insight and predictions about nature.

Since the beginning of the recorded history, mathematics has been at the forefront of every civilized society. Science and technology is the end result of mathematical knowledge and discovery. Today mathematics is deeply entrenched in our daily lives including smart phones, computers, satellites, cars, sky scrapers, bridges, weather forecasts, banking, marketing, stock exchange and in almost any product that human beings produce. For this reason, it is essential for humans to learn mathematics starting at an early age. Students who want to endeavour employment in engineering, science, medicine, architecture, business and economics must be very proficient and talented in various fields of mathematics. To achieve these goals, it takes determination, discipline and patience in studying mathematics.

Since the first graduates, Sirius College has been proud of its students’ remarkable VCE successes especially in the area of Mathematics. In 2016, our year 11 student Rami Dennaoui achieved a perfect study score of 50 in Further Mathematics. 17% of Meadow fair students received 40 and above in Further Mathematics and 14% received 40 and above in Mathematical Methods.

We wish our students enjoy learning mathematics in Sirius College and hope they continue this tradition of success this year and in the future.
